Common Misconceptions About the Meaning of Municipal Court

A common misconception about municipal courts is that they are not "real" courts or that their decisions are not as important or enforceable as those made in higher courts.

This is not true; municipal courts have real authority to adjudicate local matters, and their decisions are legally binding. Violations of municipal court orders can result in penalties, including fines or imprisonment.

Another misconception is that municipal courts only handle traffic tickets and similar minor infractions.

While traffic-related cases do make up a significant portion of the caseload in many municipal courts, these courts often have jurisdiction over a wider range of matters, including misdemeanors and civil disputes, depending on the laws of the municipality.
