What Is Interstate Commerce?

Interstate commerce refers to any commercial transactions or traffic that cross state boundaries or involve more than one state.

This concept is key to understanding the scope of regulatory powers, particularly those of the federal government in the United States, as granted by the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Interstate commerce includes a wide range of economic activities, such as the movement of goods, services, and people between states, as well as transactions conducted across state lines via mail or electronic means.

Interstate Commerce Explained

The regulation of interstate commerce is primarily a federal responsibility, underpinning the legal basis for much of the U.S. government's regulatory authority in areas ranging from environmental protection to consumer safety and civil rights.

For example, a local business that significantly affects the flow of interstate commerce can be subject to federal laws.
