- Florida Bicycle Accident Deaths
The latest available data from the NHTSA reveals that, in 2021, a total of 966 fatal bicycle accidents occurred nationwide. This stark figure underscores the importance of safety awareness for both cyclists and motorists.
Florida, unfortunately, features prominently in these national numbers. It consistently ranks among the states with the most bicycle accident injuries and fatalities.

Florida's reputation as the "Sunshine State" attracts cyclists year-round. However, the idyllic scenery can disguise the dangers on the road, and statistics paint a concerning picture of bicycle safety in Florida.
Let's explore the data from 2021 to 2024 to understand the scope of the issue, including the rising number of crashes, the prevalence of injuries, and the tragic number of fatalities.
As mentioned above, there were a total of 966 fatal bicycle accidents in 2021 across all states in the USA. Florida alone accounted for 197 of these deaths, a staggering 20.39% of the national total. This means that more than one in every five bicycle fatalities across the entire US in 2021 occurred in Florida.
Besides fatalities, Florida also experiences a high number of bicycle crashes and injuries. In 2021 alone, there were a staggering 6,404 bicycle crashes, resulting in 5,958 injuries. This means that for every cyclist fatality, there were over 30 injuries.
In comparison, the state with the second-largest number of bicycle accident deaths for that year in the US was California, with 125, followed by Texas with 91.
What is fascinating is that 27 of the US states saw less than 10 bicycle accident fatalities that year, and four states even saw none. That figure alone should illustrate just how big this problem in Florida is.
While the data on nationwide bicycle fatalities for 2022 isn't readily available yet, Florida's statistics from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles offer a troubling glimpse into the dangers cyclists face in the state.
In 2022, Florida saw a rise in bicycle fatalities to an already alarming number. There was a 13.2% increase compared to 2021—which had a disturbingly high number of deaths at 197— pushing the total to a shocking 220 deaths.
Furthermore, the data reveals the total number of crashes has also risen significantly. In 2022, there were a staggering 7,301 bicycle crashes reported in Florida, a 14.01% increase from the 6,404 crashes reported in 2021.
Over 93% or 6,808 of these crashes resulted in injuries, which is 850 more than in the year before.

The numbers from last year indicate that the troubling trends surrounding bicycle safety show no signs of slowing down. Fatalities continued their upward climb, with 223 deaths marking a new, unfortunate high in Florida. While the increase from 2022's 220 deaths may seem slight, it solidifies the concerning upward trend.
Moreover, it is not only the fatalities, but the total number of accidents and injuries are also increasing, with 8,393 bicycle crashes reported in 2023, representing a 14.68% increase from the 7,301 reported in 2022. The number of injuries also grew by 15.94% and reached 7,893 in 2023.
The early figures for 2024 show that this disturbing trend continues this year as well. As of March 16, there have already been 1,676 bicycle crashes, 1,592 injuries, and 36 deaths in Florida. This alarming consistency reinforces the critical need for immediate action to improve safety measures and prevent further tragedies on Florida's roadways.

Here are the top 10 counties with the largest number of bicycle accident deaths in Florida in 2023:
The data reveals that it is the larger and more populous counties that see the largest number of bicycle accidents in Florida. For example, Miami-Dade, the most populous county in Florida, has the highest number of accidents (969), injuries (897), and fatalities (21) in the state.
However, it must be noted that the highest number of accidents doesn’t always translate to the highest number of fatalities.
For example, in Polk County, there were a relatively small number of accidents, 208, which resulted in 14 fatalities. In comparison, in Hillsborough, there were almost three times more accidents, or 602, but 15 fatalities.
Another similar unfortunate example is Osceola, where 9 fatalities occurred in 91 accidents, translating to one death in every 10 accidents.
