IRS Free File:

Generally regarded as a program available only to taxpayers with Adjusted Gross Incomes ("AGI") of $57,000 or less, Free File is a partnership between the IRS and Free File Alliance LLC to offer taxpayers their choice of software to prepare and eFile their 2009 1040 tax return.

For taxpers whose AGI exceeds $57,000, the IRS offers tax Free File Fillable Forms that are filled out directly (not with the help of an interactive software program). The forms are available online at the IRS Web site, at the link (below).

From the IRS Web site, "Free File Fillable Forms allow taxpayers to fill out and file their tax forms electronically, just as they would on paper. This option does not include an “interview” process like the other Free File offerings, but it does allow taxpayers to enter their tax data, perform basic math calculations, sign electronically, print their returns for recordkeeping and e-file their returns. This “self-service” option may be right for those who are comfortable with the tax law, know what forms they want to use or don’t need assistance to complete their returns".

Free File and Free Fillable Forms are available only via the IRS.gov Web site. For more information and to begin using Free File, start here.

For those of you who have higher incomes or more complicated returns, including small business, the good news is that tax preparation software and online tax preparation services are competitively offered by a number of companies including H&R Block, which offers a variety of products and services from FREE filing File for FREE at hrblock.com to full service tax preparation.

Good News for California Residents:

The Franchise Tax Board has announced a free service for California filers. It is called ReadyReturn, and it means that 2 million California taxpayers already have their state tax return prepared for them, ready to review and file. To see if yours is there, visit FTB.ca.gov/ReadyReturn.

Tax Preparation Software:

If you'd rather have your tax solution running on your computer, you can download your choice of H&R Block At Home Premium & Business Software, from the most simple solution priced at $19.95 for the 2009 tax year, to the more sophisticated Premium & Business version (which supports filing of corporate, S-corporation, partnership, LLC and estate tax returns) at $79.95. All versions are backed by H&R Block's guarantees, including the company's Worry-free Audit Support®.

Tax Information and Assistance:

When tax questions arise, Legal.com recommends that you refer to an appropriate reference, such as a tax manual (like those shown below) or included as an electronic version with your tax software. Guidance can also be found at the IRS Web site or your state's official tax site. Additionally, you can research tax laws online for free in Legal.com's legal research area, and discuss tax issues with others in our Administrative Law discussion forum.

Help with Tax Laws and Audits:

For additional help or assistance with complicated issues, you should consult a tax attorney, CPA or Enrolled Agent. An often overlooked benefit of legal services plans is that several are available that provide an attorney to defend you in the event of an IRS audit. This benefit is usually only available to people who were members of the plan when the tax return was prepared or the tax became due, prior to being informed of the audit. Also, members of legal plans are able to consult an experienced tax attorney, who can answer their questions about tax laws. Learn more about legal plans (a new window will open).

Special Rules for Transportation Workers:

Pilots, truckers and other transportation workers who receive per diem while traveling are required to report this income. See Legal.com's Aviation Law area for more.
